Let Your Light Shine

Seoul Lantern Festival 2013

On a chilly November evening, there was nothing more perfect that strolling down the Cheonggyecheon Stream walkway with a warm cup of hot coco, in awe of hundreds of paper lanterns lighting up the water. What a masterpiece of peoples' imaginations...

This festival is held anually (Since 2008) along the renovated green way of the Cheonggyecheon. On any given day of the year it is a beautiful place to run, walk, stroll, sit, and explore but the nights that these lanterns shine, it is a giant work of art. All of the lanterns are paper creations that individual artists design and build. Each year has its own theme, but other than that, the design is completely up to the artist. The 2013 festival theme was to show the Hanseong Baekje Period of Korea's history.
Some of the lanterns even moved or changed color!
There was a great turnout each night of the event and I was thankful to have missed the opening weekend due to parent teacher conferences! I hear it was a bit chaotic. As a newbie to the city, I found it almost as entertaining to watch people react to the different lanterns as it was for me to see them. No matter age, gender, country of origin, or other traditionally defining factors, everyone seemed equally impressed by the lantern displays.
Of course the biology teacher loved the fish!
"Same, Same"

Seoul is one of those cities that just keeps capturing my heart. Its the little jewels hidden throughout the city and the year that make my heart happy!
